Introduction:Private Labels (PLs) often considered as the 'inferior sibling' of manufacturer brands, have turned out to be products on par with the global manufacturing brands in terms of quality and price. The market for PLs has almost become saturated in most of the developed markets of Western Europe and US, showing that its market would grow along with retail consolidation in the country. Experts observed that PLs are gaining potential in the emerging and developing nations and are growing along with their organised retail growth. India stands first among the emerging markets for PLs and is expected to grow at a rapid pace. With the Indian retail sector poised for growth, domestic brand manufacturers - although having a foothold in the market - face competition from private labels. However, whether the Indian retailing conditions are favourable for the launch of PLs remains to be seen.
